Dan Noland | Birdsnest on the Ground
Dan Noland is a great singer who can melt hearts with ballad or rock the house with downhome funk. As Blues Access wondered, "Where else can you hear covers of the Box Tops, the Spinners and Willie Nelson?" Also on tap are a pair of redhot originals, "Extra Sexy Person" and "Party Man". Contributing to the music are some of Chicago's finest including former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Matt Walker.
Jimmy Lawrence & "Chicago" Carl Snyder | Why Don't You Do Right?
A multiple winner of the singing contests at the Apollo Theater, Lawrence gets the point across whether he's rocking the blues or emoting on a jazzy ballad. The CD presents him in a variety of grooves, from rhumba to swing, with generous doses of blues guitar from Larry Burton, who has recorded with everyone from Albert King to Lou Rawls.
Dan Noland | Wrapped Up in Love Again
More deep blues (including an original, "Tell Me Who's The Fireman") and danceable pop classics including the Commodores' "Brick House", which gets a whole new groove.
Sonny Corso and the Pelicans | Steamy Days and Dreamy Nights (buy it)
Sonny has been called "the Bob Dylan of Louisiana." His songs capture the flavors of life on the bayou, in the French Quarter, and along Airline Highway, with hard-rocking musical backgrounds that range from swamp funk to Western swing. The CD includes his 1983 classic, "Down at the World Famous Restaurants of the Bayou State".
Jimmy Lawrence and "Chicago" Carl Snyder | Early in the Morning
A great new set of blues, rock, ballads and funk, with vocals by Lawrence, plus four other singers. Includes four original songs.
Illinois Slim | Born Into the Blues (buy it)
A Chicago native, Slim has a deep love for the classic Windy City sound; he plays guitar and sings squarely in the tradition of Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, et al. His songwriting skills are uniquely his, however, as attested by the shuffling "You Broke My Heart", the rocking "Your Love", the plaintive "Not Tonight" and the funky "Don't You Know", with its guitar solo by guitar virtuoso Mike Dugan.
Slim | The Second Time Around (buy it)
Slim's follow-up album stays deep in the blues vein, but with a greater emphasis on originals. The songs cook along in a variety of grooves, and tell stories that evoke a whole spectrum of emotions. Guest artists include guitar prodigy Eric Steckel and powerhouse vocalist Sarah Ayers; producer "Chicago" Carl Snyder chips in with generous contributions on the keyboars. LIVING BLUES said this CD has "a no-frills, down-to-earth blues feel".
Sonny Corso | My Baby's Tough
The bayou poet returns with another program of original songs both funny and provocative. The fare from the electric New Orleans rock of the title tune to the country sounds of "Look Out Open Road" and "One More Time for Dixie", which emplyo dobro, steel guitar and fiddle. "She Made Up Her Face" has touches of the psychedelic rock era; the Gospel-inspired "Time to Move" closes the program with an apocalyptic vision. An extra fillip is the cover, drawn especially for the CD by Skip Williamson, one of the top "underground" cartoonists of the Sixties.
The Thom Palmer Band | Slip on Outta Sight (buy it)
Thom is the complete package -- a stinging guitarist, unique vocalist, versatile songwriter, and redoubtable bandleader. The horn-enhanced sound recalls the classic days of groups like The Electric Flag and Blood Sweat & Tears, as Thom blasts his way through seven originals and four covers, ranging from Albert Collins' hard-driving "Shoe on the Other Foot" to Tuto Jones' moody "You Never Had Love" and Dr. John's "How Come My Dog Don't Bark", with it's ominous humor. Thom's own songs, including the sultry title tune and the blues ballad "Was That Right", are destined to be classics.
